Two brains are better than one

On tuesday, I was very trapped in coming up with an outcome so I decided to meet a old friend of mine. He studied engineering, and a little experience and knowledge in chemistry. Plus, I've been speaking so much to my friends who does design, so I thought it would be good to speak with someone from another faculty to get opinions and comments from another perspective.

He told me about cognitive dissonance, which is about relating experiences with senses. It also refers to a situation involving conflicting attitudes, beliefs or behaviours. A clinical term used to describe stress that arises from holding contradicting beliefs. I also learnt about positive and negative smell.

A few keywords were highlighted and they were :

  • Tagging
  • Categorise
  • Sync
  • Scent
  • Mood
  • Tunes
We also talked about smell, sight and visuals linking to memories. My outcome should be a library of a combination of : memories + experience + documentation + inspirations

By the end of a short conversation, I've decided to build a "machine" with the idea of a fractional distiller and the main objective is to preserve and obtain smells. Which will build up a library of scent.

Made up chemistry

Last week in week 5 round table, I was having a bad time finding solutions for my project because my hypothesis deals with the 5 senses. I found it hard to accommodate to all the 5 senses, during that week I also learnt about invasive senses. Invasive senses as in we take in messages using different senses and each sense are utilised at a different level.

Out of the five senses, sight and hearing are the most utilized senses as sounds and visuals are invasive and difficult to shy away from. While one might be able to not engage in tasting, touching and smelling voluntarily, it is impossible to avoid overhearing or seeing something when chanced upon as both the eyes and ears are mostly required in daily activities.

Having that theory proven in the literature review, I struggled with coming up with an outcome that accommodates all the 5 senses and balancing the usage of all 5. My peers suggested to me in the round table session that maybe I can consider to concentrate on just one sense instead of being tugged in all five directions.

After that session, I considered their comments and did some thinking. That very same day, I spoke to Stanley and he was suggesting that I should work on a app. A space where the user can document his 5 senses experience and trying out on social media. I had an idea of making a laboratory space of the 5 senses for inspiration.

I was rethinking about my outcome, my outcome needs to be something that can document experiences and a process of recording. It will encourage users to make use of their senses and constantly search for inspirations. To document our experiences by keeping a memory as an inspiration.

Then i recalled that during the winter holidays, I gave my project a second thought based on the name, Made Up Curiosity. I remember the concept revolving around chemistry,

Chemistry : Any or all of the elements that make up something
Chemistry = Made up : A mixture of substances that will make one curious about what they will achieve. Eg : In chemistry class, we are also curious about what we are going to end up with

I looked deeper into the word chemistry and I linked them to three other words : laboratory, incubator and alchemy. And the second word, memory which links to storage and retrieval. Everything is finally making senses and from all these thinking, I found a pattern.

I placed a lot of attention on the sense of smell. I looked into big words such as synthesis, heat exchange machine, perfumery technology and fractional distiller. These methods share a common factor in chemistry and they are methods to extract smell.

A for applications

Since I would be doing up an online application for my outcome, I started off with some research of a few popular applications that has the core of sharing experiences. Also, to use as case studies for research and study the functionality of these social media applications. The layouts on the applications are user friendly which is probably why people choose to use them. Also, they can be a guideline for me to refer to.

1. Visual Supply Co

Visual Supply Co (VSCO) is a company passionate about creating beautiful and efficient digital tools for the modern creative. VSCO allows users to edit colours for photographs taken on smart phones which is convenient and easy. Other than that, they have the vsco grid which is a sharing space with others after editing the photographs. Vsco has a sleek design which is really easy to use and simple, most of all, letting the photographs from individuals to speak for themselves.

VSCO also believes that beauty can be found and documented by anyone, anywhere.

2. Instagram

Instagram is a fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through a series of pictures. Snap a photo with your mobile phone, then choose a filter to transform the image into a memory to keep around forever. This app has been around for a few years and in par with twitter and Facebook, some people refer it to twitter for people who are bad at words, because this app is a focus on visuals.

However, it is about sharing of experiences and memories with people using visuals and moving visuals. Another interactive thing instagram has is #, hashtags. One can navigate into categories by using the hashtag.

3. Pinterest

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that people use to collect ideas for their different projects and interests. People create and share collections (called “boards”) of visual bookmarks (called “Pins”) that they use to do things like plan trips and projects, organize events or save articles and recipes.

The idea is "Pinning" pictures or text is like collecting things and pinning them on a personal board. However, another user can repine these post and they will be spread into different areas, which is a brilliant idea because it is made so convenient and sharable between users.

I think these three applications will be good guidelines for me to refer to, because I'm sure they are good moments sharing platforms thats why they are so popular and used by many.

Thoughts Talk

Week 6, CPJ check with Stanley. I know my CPJ has been stagnant, I've been joking about it, going around telling my classmates that my work is so stagnant, it can breed mosquitoes. I am guilty that my CPJ hasn't have a life.

After talking to Stanley on the topic of CPJ, I've decided to go easy on my CPJ. Go easy as in, not being so tensed up and strict. I can have the freedom to have various contents even if it does not sound professional or work related. Stanley mentioned that my CPJ can contain anything, musings, musings is the word. So I've decided to ask myself questions that were irrelevant and maybe one day they would be useful.

When I think about CPJ, Creative Process Journal, it is a platform for documentation of ideas, inspirations, collections, process, difficulties

My project, Made Up Curiosity : My outcomes are

  • Documentation x experiences x inspiration
  • Process of recording / Documenting Experiences
  • Constantly searching for inspirations
  • Make use of the senses
Document our experience by keeping a memory as an inspiration // Document our experience by keeping an inspiration as a memory

The key words are :

  • Documentation
  • Experience
  • Memory
  • Inspiration
So I let my thoughts, talk.
Today I spoke to myself

  • Encourage designers to frequently look out for inspirations and document them down
  • Document inspirations
  • Document experiences
but

  • How do I capture experiences?
  • How do I retain a moment?
  • How do pictures tell smell, touch and taste?
  • How do I document smell, touch and taste?
  • How do I sustain an inspiration?

Memory

While being caught up with nothing, I was browsing through the word <Memory> and I chanced upon many interesting facts about the M word.

Memory :

  • Information Stored
  • Memorisation
Sensory Memory :

  • Sensory Information
Iconic Memory :
  • Fast decaying store of visual information
  • image that has been perceived for a small duration
Echonic Memory :

  • Fast decaying store of auditory memory
  • Stores sounds perceived for small duration
Haptic Memory :

  • Database for touch stimuli

Outcome : Laboratory space of 5 senses for inspiration

I've always been interested in chemistry, chemical apparatus as art direction and using them to boost the whole look of my outcomes. And the usage of plants, flowers. And I've been deciding to create an outcome that is a laboratory space of five senses for inspirations, whereby graphic designers come into this lab with a kit of experiences they have collected and preserve their experiences with the usage of the "machines" in the laboratory.

Kit - Use to document experiences
Lab - Help enhance experience and generate into tokens (memory)

I've been thinking a lot about how I want the lab to look like and how to build it. I am overly excited, I'm not even sure if this outcome is workable but I'm glad I've got an idea to ponder on.

Below are some images as reference which I can consider to use for the laboratory, if I have one.

Musings

It is week 6, but I've got nothing on my To-do list
and I feel stuck in the middle.
Everything and nothing always haunts me

Too much input and discussion is making my brain swell
Am I worried? Of cause
Am I panicking? Not so

I'm told to talk to myself more often, jot things down, even if they are not related to my project.
I'm staring at my booklet with 300 pages of yellow sheets
With nothing but scribbles that belongs to the essay
I think something is secretly brewing now
