Travel Journal No.1 : Process

The first documentation using the travel journal in korea at cheongyecheon stream, a long and popular stream in Seoul which is filled with locals, tourist and students.

Halfway through the trip when the book was half filled, many random things were collected and did not go according to the instructions. Sometimes I collected things that contains interesting graphic designs instead of things that are directly linked to the 5 senses. But I've learned for sure that there's a lot of planning to do while trying to do the travel journal.

I've also realized that, the planning of this book was a bit too rushed out so there were a few mistakes or activities that did not work too well. Some also side tracked towards collecting things that are inspiring or focused too much on graphic design, instead of the initial plan which was a focus on the 5 senses.

Here are the few problems I faced while doing the travel journal :

  • The tracing activity is not made possible because of the french fold binding, it was not possible to trace directly into the box because the page underneath has another activity. The traveller would also need a pencil to trace.
  • The traveller would need a instax camera so that he can take instant photographs that can fit exactly into the design template.
  • Some lines of some pages are too close together and cramped, which makes it difficult to write things down.
  • Envelopes can be considered to be transparent so that it is easier to see the contents
  • The space for binding needs to be wider because it is difficult to write things inside as the booklet is too thick
  • Thinner paper can be considered too
  • A coverpage should be more obvious or a logo can be imprinted at the front

The made up curiosity traveler's journal is allows the traveler to document his adventures of a place by trusting his five senses and wander the place. The activities encourages the traveler to fully focus on one or all of his senses to ask questions. Then record down his findings about his experience and how they can link them back to design. He will also collect items found throughout the journey which symbolizes traces of the city and keep into the pockets of the journal that are hidden.
